Warsaw Pact - Vinyl Joblottin' ep.6

Each week on Vinyl Joblottin’ we buy a bundle of vinyl at auction (or find one in a record shop, charity shop, car boot sale, etc). The records are a slice of a collection, giving us a glimpse into a collector’s past. Then we spin each joblot into a theme for you.

Welcome to Vinyl Joblottin'
Listen to episode 6 here - https://www.mixcloud.com/AlbanLow/warsaw-pact-vinyl-joblottin-ep6/

This auction lot caught my attention with its stylish geometric cover designs from the 1950s and 60s. Many of the records came from the Supraphon and Muza labels, which were based in Eastern Europe, behind the Iron Curtain. This week I’ve spun everything into a programme about some of the musicians who were performing in the Warsaw Pact countries of Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania and the Soviet Union.

This episode features records from a joblot of 6 records that cost £4.82. Alban Low is your joblotter for this 20 minute episode.

1. I Want To Die Easy - Eva Sepešiová & The Traditional Club
2. Trepak - Evgeny Blinov
3. I've Found A New Baby - Gery Scottová
4. Serce - Irena Santor
5. Zielone Liście Drzew - Sława Przybylska
6. Swinging School - Brigitte Petry

Nearly all of us have had a nickname given to us. Usually they evolve from our first names or surnames but sometimes it’s because of a funny incident or an accidental mispronounciation. My nicknames have included Orbs, All-Bran, Bourbon, and at my first job after university I was called Al Bowlly. This week I’ve found a joblot of 6 records from musicians who all have nicknames (or titles). Listen to their music and discover the stories behind their names.

This episode features records from a joblot of 6 records that cost £4.10. Alban Low is your joblotter for this 20 minute episode.

It’s been a hard week joblotting. I’ve been outbid on two big joblots. I have at least two nemeses who swoop in at the last moment to plunder the spoils for profit. Luckily I was able to win this ragtag lot of miscellaneous vinyl from 1956 to 1964. I play my records in the evenings. It made me think what time of day would suit the sound and style of each record, and if there was a specific name for each of these listening hours.

This episode features records from a joblot of 6 records that cost £4.10. Alban Low is your joblotter for this 20 minute episode.

This week I was inspired by the story of Hervé Vilard, whose life story reads like an adventure novel. I found his first record, Capri c'est fini, in a joblot of French vinyl. Vinyl Joblottin' Ep.2 - African-American Spirituals in Europe

Welcome to Vinyl Joblottin'

Each week on Vinyl Joblottin’ we buy a bundle of vinyl at auction (or find one in a record shop, charity shop, car boot sale, etc). The records are a slice of a collection, giving us a glimpse into a collector’s past. Then we spin each joblot into a theme for you.
After I won a joblot of African-American Spirituals vinyl I looked on Discogs (the online music database) for similar records. I was surprised to find that the highest number of releases were from France (30%) while only 8% were from the USA. The French public have a long standing affinity with the music. As early as the 1870s Fisk University sent its first troupe of ‘Jubilee Singers’ to France to raise money for the instituition. For 7 years these singers gave concerts throughout Europe.
This episode features records from a joblot of 6 records that cost £11.09. Alban Low is your joblotter for this 20 minute episode.
