It is very rare to see a Bollywood joblot for sale at auction so I had to take a chance on this bundle of vinyl. The records reveal the world of playback singers, who operate behind the scenes of Bollywood’s famous films. A playback singer is a singer whose singing is pre-recorded for use in films. The actors and actresses who appear on screen lip-sync to the songs for the camera, and the audience never see the actual singer. This episode introduces 7 playback singers and the films that featured their songs.

This Joblot of 6 records cost £23.84. Alban Low is your Joblotter. Part of the 'A World in London' radio series.

A miscellaneous joblot is always a gamble: you never know what to expect. The records this week are all 7”s and come from a range of labels, eras and styles. Within the joblot I found several cover versions that were recorded in a different country to the original. They include an Australian disco classic with a Mexican twist, a French version of a Motown bestseller, an Aretha Franklin song now a Congolese cover, a French-Canadian homage to Elvis, and a Bobby Darin chart topper respun by a Croatian singer.

This episode features records from a joblot of 7 records that cost £8.30. Alban Low is your joblotter for this 20 minute episode.

1. Amor En El Aire - La Edad
2. Un Verre De Whisky - Monty

Welcome to Vinyl Joblottin'

This week I bought a joblot of jazz vinyl from my local record fair and record shop in Twickenham. I’ve been lucky to be part of the London jazz community for the past ten years. I love the scene’s rituals and language. It made me look at some of the jazz languages that have developed in its history. These include Cab Calloway’s Hepster’s Dictionary, Slim Gaillard’s Vout-o-Reenee Jive language, Swinging Syllables the Beatnik pamphlet, and A Jazz Lexicon compiled by Robert S. Gold.

This episode features records from a joblot of 5 records that cost £5.39. Alban Low is your joblotter for this 20 minute episode.

1 - Zah Zuh Zah - Cab Calloway & His Orchestra
2 - Y'Know What I Mean - Marian McPartland
3 - Willow Weep For Me - Bud Powell
4 - Slippery - Milt Jackson & Ray Brown
5 - Hi'Ya Sophia - Benny Goodman And His Sextet

In a week when a joblot of ten shellac records was all smashed in the post, I was so pleased that these discs from New Zealand safely made it through. Many of them come from the 1950s when Māori bands were at the forefront of New Zealand popular music. The first record this week inspired the famous TV series ‘When Haka Became Boogie’. This series was first broadcast on TVNZ in 1990 and rediscovered the forgotten history of Māori popular music and its star names.

This episode features records from a joblot of 7 records that cost £13.41. Alban Low is your joblotter for this 20 minute episode.

Tracklist
1. Haka Boogie - Leigh Westbrook with Barry Slot and his Rhythm
2. Yellow Bird - Inia Te Wiata

5. Pania Of The Reef - Motuiti Youth Club
