The Gary Willcox Quartet has been playing together since 2008. Each member has developed strong individuality and profile through years of experience playing with many of the UK’s leading jazz/folk artists (Iain Ballamy, Gilad Atzmon, Bobby Wellins, Brian Finnegan, Ian Shaw). They play a mixture of original material & material of some of the masters of the idiom (e.g. Charlie Parker / Wayne Shorter) , arranged for the band’s own purposes.

“A versatile band with a rich, emotive sound: three powerful yet thoughtful soloists propelled by a lively, rustling drummer, playing open, attractively airy music imbued with just the right mix of punch and wistfulness.”
Chris Parker

Stephen Main
Born in 1972 and from Shepperton, Middx, Gary Willcox started playing the drums when he was 10 years old, with encouragement from his father, himself a musician. He quickly became fascinated with the great jazz drummers Buddy Rich, Max Roach & Art Blakey and through them discovered the whole world of Jazz. In 1988 Gary started formal drum studies with renowned drum kit teacher Trevor Tomkins. Gary went on to study orchestral percussion at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. Gary has been playing around UK & European jazz scene since the mid ’90’s, performing with the likes of Jim Mullen, Ian Shaw, Chris Batchelor, Chris Biscoe, Iain Ballamy, Alex Garnett.

Part of In the Round at the Roundhouse (Camden) Portico Quartet performed music from their fourth studio album Art in the Age of Automation, as well as luminous classics from their much loved back catalogue, and live debuts of previously unheard new music.

Keir Vine
Mercury Prize-nominated Portico Quartet have always been an impossible band to pin down. Sending out echoes of jazz, electronica, ambient music and minimalism, the group created their own singular, cinematic sound over the course of three studio albums, from their 2007 breakthrough Knee-Deep in the North Sea, and 2010 John Leckie produced Isla, to the self-titled recording Portico Quartet in 2012. Now rebooted as Portico Quartet, with the return of Keir Vine on hangs and keys after a brief spell as the three-piece Portico, the group released their fourth studio album Art In The Age Of Automation on forward thinking indie jazz and electronica label Gondwana Records in August 2017. It’s been hailed as possibly their finest album yet, with the band simultaneously delivering both a return to their mesmeric signature sound and fresh new sonic departures in their new music.

Rami Nakhleh
Next up on this AWIL were Hasan and Rami Nakhleh from TootArd, who’d just flown in from Paris and are set to play Rich Mix on February 1st! TootArd’s superb album ‘Laissez Passer’ has stirred up a whole heap of excitement on the international scene since it emerged last year. Their tracks marry rock guitar with classical Arabic sax,  painting in Maqam riffs and Levant-tinted desert blues, filtered through deep dubby Reggae bass lines and compelling Maghreb rhythms. This charged and infectious winning musical formula of traditional meets urban has been handed down from their father and gleaned from YouTube, whilst their lyrical themes centre around the natural world, love, and travel. This latter point is a poignant one for TootArd having grown up in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights. Their idyllic small village in the Majdal Shams mountains is constrained by borders yet inhabited by people restricted by their ID pass - Laissez Passer - leaving them effectively stateless & without a sense of belonging. But in TootArd’s case, their bold, unique, and inventive sounds qualify them as citizens of the world-class musician community, and fortunately for all of us, a musical passport to freedom. Find out more here: https://www.tootard.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tootard/

El Jehaz
It’s been just four short years since the guys from 47 Soul moved to London, stamping their electrofying sound on British soil, wowing muddy festival-goers from Glastonbury to WOMAD. On February 2nd they’ll launch their first full studio album, ‘Balfron Promise’, with an un-missable showcase at the Jazz Cafe. The quartet met in Jordan 2013, forming an alliance built on their individual music-making skills, and as four individual souls rooted in Palestine. As you’ll hear in this AWIL interview with Hamza (El Jehaz) and Ramzy (Z the People), interspersed with extracts from Balfron Promise, 47 Soul are powerful communicators, employing words & music perfectly in the art of expression. Their lyrics, sung in Arabic and English, are challenging and thought-provoking, exposing truths and correcting history, all framed within a turbo-charged, multi-layered concoction of Arabic riffs, vocal choruses, and blistering hip-hop beats. 47 Soul own this new genre Shamstep, and it’s expertly designed, providing a stepping stone into Middle Eastern sounds fused through urban London. This accessibility resonates with their overall message which is about connecting people through the common language of music and stitching fractured communities back together. The time has come for repair, not rage, and 47 Soul are the ideal diplomats to build bridges.

Duncan Eagles and Becky Morse - Janet's Jazz Night

Paul Michael - bass

Next Janet's Jazz Night

Terence Collie
An energised Cafe Posk was treated to a Duncan Eagles inspired set that owed more to his jam busting roots than recent Brit-wave compositions. Eagles cut his teeth on a diet of jazz jams, alongside the best musicians of his generation he honed his skills in the gladiatorial dens of Kingston-upon-Thames and Streatham. Eagles is now a comfortable and polished performer, perfect for nights such as these, but do not miss the opportunity to see him push the boat into deeper waters with his trio Partikel. One tune penned by his own hand is worth two from the Jazz bush.

Becky Morse

You might not know the name nor the voice of Becky Morse, but here is a woman who loves taking risks. It would have been easy to play safe in a challenging environment such as this but Morse eschewed the usual vocal fare. Yes there was a Jobim crowd pleaser but also the more ambitious Spain from Chick Corea. Becky Morse is a woman of many talents, when not singing in London's nightspots she is a script supervisor on some of the UK's best TV and Film productions. If you've watched Mr Selfridge, Line of Duty, Broadchurch, Black Mirror, Silent Witness, Holby City or EastEnders then you'll probably have witnessed her work.

Janet McCunn
The very popular series of Janet’s Jazz Nights are hosted by Janet McCunn and fabulous house band led by Terence Collie  and feature a first set with a special guest instrumentalist followed by a guest vocalist joining Janet for the second set. The third and final set is a jam session so all can come and sing and play. Just put your name on the list! These are fun and friendly social evenings with a Jam Session at the end…all musicians welcome.

Ben Mandelson from Les Triaboliques on this A World in London!

Fabulous guitar trio, Les Triaboliques return to our capital’s live scene for a rare gig on January 19th at Rich Mix London. Justin Adams, Lu Edmonds, and Ben Mandelson are the sensational strummers in this cult band that formed in 2009, releasing their definitive, and only album, Rivermudtwilight to wide critical acclaim. On this AWIL, Ben Mandelson provides an insight into the careers of his comrades in lute, but also a reminder of his own staggering list of achievements spanning over 40 years in every aspect of the music industry. There’s been touring with Billy Bragg, Magazine, 3 Mustaphas 3, Yiddish Twist Orchestra, and the creation of pioneering label Globestyle Records. Ben excels in everything he does, whether it’s producing albums for Ladino goddess Yasmin Levy and Algerian piano legend Maurice El Médioni- Official, or co-founding the essential annual world music expo WOMEX, but, he’s a humble guy that doesn’t really ‘do’ social media, instead selflessly sharing his time & wisdom to empower other artists – I’m one of them. First & foremost though, Ben is a passionate musician, and it’s in Les Triaboliques that he is matched with equally virtuosic peers.

The booking of these personalities is largely due to the hard work of 'Joe the Hat', one of Twickenham's great treasures. Twice a year the Richmond Rhythm Club organises a concert that is much more about walking the walk rather than talking the talk. A hand picked group, representing the crème de la crème of the current scene, performs to a packed audience. Sara Dowling is a Singer/Songwriter currently living in London. Gifted with immensely emotional vocals her influences are wide and far reaching, reminiscent of jazz and  soul greats such as Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin and Candi Statton, but mixed with poetic lyrics and haunting melodies. Born in Oman to an Irish father and Arabic mother, she spent the early part of her life travelling through the middle east due to the nature of her fathers work. As a child she experienced great journeys through endless desert, in years to come this would provide much inspiration for poetry and lyrics. http://www.saradowling.co.uk/

Amy Roberts
Amy Roberts, from near Penzance, West Cornwall, is a multi award-winning flautist, clarinettist and saxophonist. Voted winner of the Miscellaneous Category in the 2015 British Jazz Awards, and the Rising Star Category in the British Jazz Awards in both 2009 and 2011, Amy has earned an enviable reputation throughout not only the UK but also abroad. http://www.amyrobertsjazz.co.uk/

Richard Exall
Richard Exall studied clarinet at the Royal College of Music with international soloist Michael Collins. Self-taught on saxophone, he formed his own jazz quartet and big band while still at college and quickly became a familiar figure on the London jazz scene. Recently, Richard has worked with Kenny Ball and toured with American pianist Johnny Varro’s Swing Seven throughout Germany and Switzerland, and runs his own band “Richard Exall’s Shooting Stars” which is a favourite  at jazz clubs and festivals. http://www.richardexall.com/home.html
Al Nicholls
Al Nicholls is the product of a sound musical training, both academically through Leeds College of Music and practically via the bands of Ray Gelato, The Big Town Playboys, King Pleasure and many others bigger and smaller. Al is also the leader and musical driving force of London's renowned jump jive and good time swing band Blue Harlem. Al also plays regularly with the band of TJ Johnson and with fellow tenor saxophonist Jo Fooks. http://www.alnicholls.co.uk/homepage
Dave Chamberlain
Dave Chamberlain has been playing the double bass since the age of 16. He studied in London and Paris with Dominic Black, Simon Woolf and Pierre Boussaguet, the latter an alumnus of Ray Brown. From 2002 to 2008 he was the full-time bass player with Blue Note recording artist Stacey Kent. Current projects with which I'm involved include 100 Years of Jazz in 99 Minutes, the Graham Harvey Trio and the Back To Basie Orchestra. https://www.davechamberlain.biz/

Pianist Leon Greening's hard swinging style has made him a favourite on the jazz scene for over a decade, and makes no apologies for his adoration of the great bebop pianists, with Wynton Kelly, Bobby Timmons and Bud Powell among his primary influences.

Leon Greening
Sebastiaan De Krom graduated with distinction from Berklee College of Music and went on to study a Masters degree at New England Conservatory. In 1995 he won the prestigious Buddy Rich Award and from 1997 to 1999 was the drummer for the renowned Thelonious Monk Institute Jazz Performance programme. Sebastiaan has performed with artists such as Herbie Hancock and John Scofield, and played regular sessions for Jamie Cullum from 2001 to 2008.
