Four weddings & no funeral with the SOAS Klezmer Band on this A World in London!

Clayton Dahm
We had a fabulous  dance - tanz fest on this AWIL as the SOAS Klezmer Band whirled us around the studio with their mix of traditional  Eastern European sounds & Yiddish songs! SKB is the only university group in our capital dedicated to preserving this Jewish music tradition and its current members include brilliant musicians like Clayton Dahm, Rachel Sears, John MacNaughton, Laura Thomlinson, Kieran Hagan, and the ubiquitous dance caller & ‘Whitechapel Noise’ author Vivi Lachs. SKB was created just at the turn of this century by founding members like Merlin Shepherd and its offshoots include groups like She’koyokh, Don Kipper, and Oysland. Anyone can join the SOAS Klezmer Band so what are you waiting for? The party is ON! Find out more via their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/SOASKlezmer/

Defining the African narrative, gifted singer songwriter Amira Kheir on this A World in London! Click to listen: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-world-in-london-13th-february-2019/

This weekend there’s a chance to see Amira Kheir at the Ahbab Festival in Cambridge, and after meeting her on AWIL, we know she’s going to be magnificent! One broadcaster has dubbed her the‘Diva of the Sudanese Desert’ which seems like a lazy definition when describing such a serious & skilled singer who is anything but a diva. Amira is soulful and heritage conscious, asking searching questions about life and identity through her music, plus her voice is exceptional no matter which genre someone tries to pigeon hole it into. She sings with grace as well as authority, and her vocals ebb & flow like a river, especially when accompanied by droplets of notes played by Nadir Ramzy on oud. Nadir is the only other Sudanese member of Amira’s close-knit band yet everyone is joyfully unanimous in the music-making and Arabic choruses. Regardless of whether we all understand all the lyrics, mystic powers combine with answers & truths to create a binding journey that transcends language & borders. With Tal Janes on guitar, Mikele Montolli on bass, and Leandro Mancini on drums, a beautiful energy of love and mutual respect was apparent in the studio. The band sailed through pentatonic scales and East African polyrhythms, embracing Amira’s elaborate phrasing and ornamentation that goes with traditional Sudanese vocal style, whilst also infusing a generous amount of Jazz, Blues, and Soul into Nubian melodies & ancient forms.

Mikele Montolli
Amira grew up in Turin and also spent much time in Khartoum where she always ‘eating up music’, but it was her move to London in 2003 that liberated her identity as a professional musician. Amira has released three acclaimed albums showcasing her unique sound & the opportunity to fully `tap into the power of the beautiful gift of heritage'. You can too by hearing her excellent latest CD ‘Mystic Dance’ and listening to this World Radio Day edition of A World in London! http://amirakheir.com/

The Gillies - A World in London

A World in London, Resonance FM, London, UK

Worries Fold Up Their Wings with The Gillies on this A World in London!
Acoustic Americana duo, The Gillies, nipped over to our studio en route to their gig in Blackheath, which by all accounts went rather well. It’s a sure bet that the audience down the road from us were equally impressed by what this amazing husband and wife team can do with a pair of guitars and Susan’s gorgeous, warm & unique voice. When you hear it, together with some beautiful finger-picking harmonies, your cares float away and the world seems just that little bit brighter. Behind the effortless, easy-listening sound conjured up by Susan & Gilly, there’s actually much hard work that goes into their songs. Their self-perception is still of themselves as art students and not professional musicians, so they strive, texture, multi-layer, and keep returning to each piece of work until it’s coloured and crafted exactly to sound carefree and ‘natural’. There’s a refreshing honesty and unpretentious approach to everything that they do, and this, plus the special chemistry only romantic couples share on stage is infused into their music-making with clever wordplay and harmonies of the sweetest kind. A third album is being processed by Gillies right now and it'll be dedicated to London, their adopted home after Norfolk, but meanwhile find their excellent other CDs now, and get yourself a whole heap of outstanding songwriting on Back Porch Recordings – ‘Worries Fold Up Their Wings’ and ‘No Hiding Place’. www.thegilliesmusic.com
