Kingston, Norfolk Island - Interloper's Guide ep.8


Join Kevin Acott, Harvey Wells and Alban Low on The Interloper's Guide to Kingston (Norfolk Island). Every episode the trio travel to a new location around the world in a quest to capture the spirit of the place. It is a search for the sensation of Hiraeth, a homesickness for a place you have yet to visit. We’re going back to the 1950s this week with a joblot of records that are more than 60 years old. Quotes come from The Teen Age Book, a book that was published by my family just after WW2. It was recently given to me by artist Peter S Smith. It includes advice for teenagers from celebrities including actor James Mason, florist Constance Spry, lawn tennis champion Dorothy Round and editor Phyllis Digby Morton.

Every new vinyl release is an adventure worthy of celebration. Inspired by the new LP from the iyatraQuartet (Break the Dawn, 2020) I have spun their opening track Black Seas into a voyage of vinyl discovery. Our journey plunges us into seven small seas from around the globe. Starting in the Antarctic Cosmonauts Sea and ending in flames in the Icarian Sea.

In episode 11 our vinyl story comes from the record collection of Ronnie Aye Maung. He was born in Burma but spent many years of his life working and living in other countries around the world. In the mid 1960s he moved with his family to Trinidad. This week his daughter Natalie Low shares some of her memories about her time growing up in Trinidad.
