Nina Miranda and Kadialy Kouyaté - Norman Druker Special

Nina Miranda

14th November 2018
A World in London, Resonance FM, Borough, London

Brazil met up with Senegal on A World In London this week – not on a boat in the mid-Atlantic, but in the Resonance FM radio studio – with two of these countries finest artists creating a musical treat for us.

Kadialy Kouyaté
Nina Miranda and Kadialy Kouyaté have both guested before on AWIL, but never played live together on air. In fact, their first public performance was about ten days ago. On the strength of this, AWIL asked them to recreate it for the listeners of London, and they were both happy to.
Nina told us about her latest album (with one track already a hit in Portugal), and paid tribute to one of her musical influences. Kadialy Kouyaté, meanwhile, continues working on solo projects, collaborations, musical theatre, kora teaching and, thankfully for us, live radio sessions.
As well as having the honour of being in the presence of two great singers and players improvising some haunting and beautiful music together...... I've now met someone who's appeared on Top Of The Pops!

Ramon Goose - Electric Blues

Ramon Goose
Ramon Goose

24th October 2018
A World in London, Resonance FM, London, UK

Assistant AWIL producer Norman Druker spends some time with renowned guitarist/composer Ramon Goose on A World in London radio.

Norman Druker

Since his last visit to A World In London a year ago, guitarist and singer Ramon Goose is back from Tiznit (the Moroccan-based inspiration of his last CD) and has returned a few steps into his blues roots. He played us a searing electric blues set, powered by a valve amp made from a reconstructed Bell & Howell film projector. Even on a low volume setting, he shook the studio. Our conversation roamed from the power of old blues survivors “rediscovered” in the 1960s, Ramon's joys of playing the Latin American music learned from his Argentinian father, to his introduction to African music by his mother. Never one to stand still, Ramon has a new project underway, working with “a well known producer” (a former guest on A World In London). We're sworn to secrecy, but when the record comes out and hits it big, we're sure that Ramon will visit us – maybe even with Mr Producer – and shake the studio again.

Fantastic music on DJ Ritu's #AWIL with audio visual sound scientists - Addictive TV, who played new tracks, as well as tracks from there album ‘Orchestra of Samples’. Graham Daniels and Mark Vidler spoke to Sophie Darling and Norman Druker in the Resonance 104.4fm studio about piecing together their 200+ puzzle of human musical samples.
Graham Daniels
Together they travel the world gathering global snippets from various improvisations, visiting countries, schools, villages, individuals to collect, cut up and re-connect various improvisations and musical clippings. The result: the Fantastic ‘#Orchestra Of Samples’ released last year, and now they’re touring with an all-out tech filled show.
Normally accompanied by multiple live musicians, and a large immersive video depicting the musicians playing their improvisations as they appear in the songs, the audio - VISUAL elements become imperative in their live performances, as you’re treated to the 5th element of the band: the screen, that clarifies what samples and instruments you hear in each piece.

They have just embarked upon an exciting UK tour, Addictive TV are continuously creating, collecting and producing new and exciting mash ups. If you go on their website: http://www.orchestraofsamples.com/ you can download a collection of the samples they have collected FOR FREE as part of a ‘remix’ initiative.

Our Chanukah & Christmas special was lifted into outer-orbit by Balkanesque big band, the London Gypsy Orchestra! Nine members of this charity-based outfit squeezed themselves into our studio, along with their fine array of instruments ranging from a pocket trumpet to a mother-of-pearl inlaid accordion. Linguistic chameleons Sarah Montague and Agnes Branner led a bold & brassy vocal trek across Eastern Europe taking in gypsy classics from Hungary to Macedonia including a marvellous cover of Esma Redzepova’s ‘Caje Sukarije’. LGO has been on the road since 2005 when it was first founded by Magic Violin’s Gundula Gruen, and they’re still one of the most exciting and vibrant groups in our capital.

The London Gypsy Orchestra brings together 20 musicians of all backgrounds and nationalities to perform vibrant, passionate and energetic music from Eastern Europe and the Balkans. The group performs in a variety of venues and formats - from evening gala concerts to theatre venues and festival appearances. Venues have included the Union Chapel, St George's Bristol and Carling Academy Oxford, and festivals have included the Pulse Festival on the South Bank, Dorchester Arts Festival, Rhythms of the World, the London International Gypsy Film Festival and the Ealing Jazz Festival.
Marc Craste
The orchestra also organises interactive community events, educational activities and workshops, such as the Gypsy Exchange project funded by Awards for All, and an annual all-day event at Cecil Sharp House. The LGO is a registered charity, and through its performances, projects and outreach events, aims to inspire and educate the community in the magic of Gypsy music and culture.

Stephen Simblet
Their charitable aims are:
1. To advance, improve, develop and maintain public education and appreciation in music, arts and culture, particularly, but not exclusively, in relation to Gypsy and folk music from Eastern Europe and the Balkans.
2. To advance public education in music and musical skills and to inspire participation in and appreciation of the art of music.
3. To advance public education in the arts and musical traditions of different cultures.
4. To promote equality and diversity for the public benefit, in particular by:
  a) providing or supporting music and creative arts projects which foster integration and skill sharing between people from diverse backgrounds;
  b) educating the public about different peoples and cultures, especially through music and arts, to increase awareness and understanding.
