Samaïa - Polyphonic Wanderlust

Luna Silva
Samaïa
Luna Silva
Noémie Nael
Eléonore Fourniau

A tryclone of unaccompanied voice with Samaïa on this A World in London!

Eléonore Fourniau
Vivacious vocal trio Samaïa are in town for the London leg of their European tour. Their debut album is a rich powerhouse of women’s voices reinterpreting folk songs from across the globe, gilted with unique harmonies. On this AWIL they gifted us with treasures from Sweden, Turkey, and Bulgaria, and we learned about their unconventional warm up exercises that include massage and yoga! ‘We sing with our whole body’ explains Luna Silva, going on to describe the athletics of intertwining melodies through three voices. Samaïa weave a rich tapestry of polyphony, mostly accapela, but with minimal touches of percussion, that add to the primal feel of their songs. In fact they met at a Georgian polyphonic workshop, which hints at how extraordinary they are. Luna is the daughter of a Spanish clown and English actress, studied ethnomusicology at SOAS, plus Hindi, ukulele, and jaws harp. Noémie Nael comes from a theatre background. Eléonore Fourniau, studied in Istanbul, plays the saz, and is a queen of Anatolian ornamentation. The three might all have been raised in France but when it comes to music, possibly even The World Is Not Enough to contain their wanderlust! Samaia take their name from a Georgian dance performed by women which originated in the 12th century. Sample a glorious tricolour of harmony, magic, and shakti with the 21st century Samaïa now - three wonderful voices dancing in one superlative body of sound!

Find out more here: https://www.facebook.com/SamaiaGroupe/ See Samaïa live across France in June & July, and back in the UK at Shambala Festival Aug 25th & Campfire Club Aug 30th!

Fantastic music on DJ Ritu's #AWIL with audio visual sound scientists - Addictive TV, who played new tracks, as well as tracks from there album ‘Orchestra of Samples’. Graham Daniels and Mark Vidler spoke to Sophie Darling and Norman Druker in the Resonance 104.4fm studio about piecing together their 200+ puzzle of human musical samples.
Graham Daniels
Together they travel the world gathering global snippets from various improvisations, visiting countries, schools, villages, individuals to collect, cut up and re-connect various improvisations and musical clippings. The result: the Fantastic ‘#Orchestra Of Samples’ released last year, and now they’re touring with an all-out tech filled show.
Normally accompanied by multiple live musicians, and a large immersive video depicting the musicians playing their improvisations as they appear in the songs, the audio - VISUAL elements become imperative in their live performances, as you’re treated to the 5th element of the band: the screen, that clarifies what samples and instruments you hear in each piece.

They have just embarked upon an exciting UK tour, Addictive TV are continuously creating, collecting and producing new and exciting mash ups. If you go on their website: http://www.orchestraofsamples.com/ you can download a collection of the samples they have collected FOR FREE as part of a ‘remix’ initiative.
Be sure to catch them on their coming dates in: Poly Arts Centre, Capitol Theatre, Harwich Festival, Marine Theatre, Int’l Festival, Prod’n’lab, Storyhouse, Junction 12, Constellations, Pheonix Arts Centre, Cresent Arts Centre.

A World In London (AWIL) saw a Sophie Darling take-over, as DJ Ritu and the AWIL team are spread across the world.

Frank Portuondo Ortiz
A high energy performance from Afro-Cuban London based SON band: Son Yambu.
LISTEN HERE: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-world-in-london-11th-april-2018/

Son Yambu play SON music: the fusion of Spanish and African rhythms that together, many years ago in the Oriente Province of Cuba, came together to form the very bread and butter of the world’s latin music scene today. It is the predecessor to salsa, to rhumba, to latina… we are speaking about … son Cubano! (of course!).

Dunia Correa
Created in the depths of Eastern Cuba in the mid-19th century, son music arose from the thousands of African slaves who were forced to work in the sugar cane fields in Cuba. Here they continued their African musical traditions, playing their rhythms in their communities, and fusing it with the hispanics who were also enslaved on the island. From this melting pot of cultures and rhythms sprung the birth of son. Then came the explosion of this characteristically Cuban music, followed later by the Buena Vista Social Club popularising Cuban music, placing it on the “world-music” map and into the spotlight. It’s an influential music which has hit every part of the globe.

Javier Fioramonti
On this AWIL we have London’s finest son band accompanying us in the Resonance studio. Toby playing Timbales and cowbells, the Savinge cousins on congas and trumpet, Frank on tres, Javier on bass and Dunia on vocals and güiro were all packed into the resonance studio. We on AWIL were treated to some new tracks from their up-coming, as yet, untitled album.

Toby Herschmann
Son Yambu formed in 2011 with the debut album ‘La Maravilla’ which was released in 2012. After this they toured profusely playing all manner of festivals and concerts throughout the world, and a short seven years after their inception, they returned to London to record their second album. On AWIL Son Yambu talk us through the structural and historical elements to the infamous SON genre. They tell us about playing concerts in our capital city of London and of the Latin and Cuban communities of which they find themselves a part. From the bomba to the timba, the rhumba to the son, we explore a musical madness that’s infectiously happy….and irresistibly danceable.
