El Jehaz |
It’s been just four short years since the guys from 47 Soul
moved to London, stamping their electrofying sound on British soil,
wowing muddy festival-goers from Glastonbury to WOMAD. On February
2nd they’ll launch their first full studio album, ‘Balfron
Promise’, with an un-missable showcase at the Jazz Cafe. The
quartet met in Jordan 2013, forming an alliance built on their
individual music-making skills, and as four individual souls rooted
in Palestine. As you’ll hear in this AWIL interview with Hamza (El
Jehaz) and Ramzy (Z the People), interspersed with extracts from
Balfron Promise, 47 Soul are powerful communicators, employing words
& music perfectly in the art of expression. Their lyrics, sung in
Arabic and English, are challenging and thought-provoking, exposing
truths and correcting history, all framed within a turbo-charged,
multi-layered concoction of Arabic riffs, vocal choruses, and
blistering hip-hop beats. 47 Soul own this new genre Shamstep, and
it’s expertly designed, providing a stepping stone into Middle
Eastern sounds fused through urban London. This accessibility
resonates with their overall message which is about connecting people
through the common language of music and stitching fractured
communities back together. The time has come for repair, not rage,
and 47 Soul are the ideal diplomats to build bridges.
